32 million tonnes of equivalent oil exploited

Members of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group have exploited 9.32 million tonnes of equivalent oil over the past five months, including 6.09 millioin tonnes of crude oil and 3.14 billion cubic metres of gas.

Gas reaches all-time highs as global prices keep soaring

Industry experts have attributed the higher prices to the price hike on the global market and the rising exchange rate between the US dollar and the Vietnamese dong.Several gas agents in Hanoi have raised retail gas prices by VND5,000-15,000, hitting an all-time high of around VND280,000-295,000 (US$17.5-18.4) per 12kg canister, over the past few days.

Provinces must watch market

The Dung Quat Oil Refinery Plant, a key project in the central province of Quang Ngai, is expected to begin production by February 2009. Attention needed to be paid to market management and speculation in Binh Thuan, Kon Tum, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces and Can Tho City, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told leaders in the localities yesterday.

Trade deficit soars to $14.4bil since Jan

Vietnam’s trade deficit in the first five months of this year reached US$14.4bil, already $3.5bil over the 2008 target.

Economists from the General Statistics Office (GSO) attributed the deficit to high demand for materials, equipment and machines for production and construction, as well as a strong surge in auto and gold imports, which drove total import value 2.4 times higher than that of last year.
